(Audio) #104 Working Tin Mill Hill
Author: MaryMcPherson

A couple of days ago, LoggerHogger posted a photo of Peninsula Terminal 2-6-2T #104. This locomotive still exists today, carrying the same number as Black Hills Central Railroad #104 as she runs between Hill City and Keystone in South Dakota's Black Hills.

I stopped by the Black Hills Central on August 7, 1994, and found the crew agreeable to setting up recording equipment on the locomotive. I took the bag containing the recorder and microphone and wrapped the shoulder strap around a grab iron on the pilot. It wasn't going anywhere.

"It might fall off or get damaged," they pointed out.

"Well, if it does then it's my own fault isn't it?" I replied.

Good point.

Leaving Hill City, the line to Keystone curves behind the locomotive shop and before long starts up the 4% grade of Tin Mill Hill. The sounds begin as the locomotive hits the bottom of the hill and crosses the Old Keystone Road, and ends after crossing the road again just before reaching the top of the grade.
